To a large degree, the HHMI Professors Program seeks to speed the evolution of university-level biological science curricula to better address the need of our society to understand biology. The Bio2010 Report articulated many reasons why such changes should take place. In 2002, HHMI searched for its first Professors, and UC Santa Cruz nominated Manny Ares to write. Ares proposed The Hughes Undergraduate Research Laboratory (HURL) as a crucible within which he could learn the challenges of remodeling university education in the biological sciences. His idea was to run an interdisciplinary research laboratory comprised primarily of undergraduates studying for a variety of majors, working on important questions whose solutions require interdisciplinary collaboration. The original proposal describes this in more detail.
