This project was supported by a $1 Million award from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professors Program. Most of the funds were dedicated to summer support for undergraduate researchers, graduate and postdoctoral mentors, supplies for doing research, and special equipment dedicated to undergraduate research.

The Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology Department contributed two TA-ships per year to support HURL graduate mentors.
The department also provided academic laboratory credit to undergraduate researchers during the school year in the form of a course Biology 185L, and a portion of Professor Ares's teaching responsibilities for the department were devoted to this course.
Chris Jong, who normally runs the Department's teaching labs, supported HURL students by helping maintain lab supply stocks, and Michael Mason, the Department's instrument specialist helped maintain equipment.

An Advisory Board was chosen to help guide the program and provide outside perspective. The Board met in Santa Cruz once, but each of these individuals provided advice and encouragement at many points along the way, to both students and mentors in the program.

A special contribution was made by Advisory Board member Joe DeRisi.
