My interest in Ares lab is in the genomics and RNA processing in malaria parasites. We are using comparative genomics and RNA analysis to identify non-coding RNAs in malaria genome. These include candidate RNAs whose orthologs are found in other organism and also novel structural RNAs of unknown function. We are using, RNA biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology techniques to characterize the mechanism of function of these structural RNAs. Additionally, we are also working with RNA processing enzymes in malaria parasites to identfy suitable therapeutic targets. Our laboratory has large collections of chemical compounds which we are screening using the in-house robotic system for new hits and intend to use microarrays to eventually identify their target biomolecules in malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum.
